Accenture Federal Services (AFS), a subsidiary of Accenture (NYSE: ACN), has been awarded a $190 million prime contract by the U.S. Department of State to provide advanced data and systems engineering support for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Celebrating its 20th anniversary, PEPFAR has played a pivotal role in saving 25 million lives and preventing millions of HIV infections globally. The program remains the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease, significantly advancing global health outcomes.
Under this contract, AFS will introduce new technologies and architectures to modernize PEPFAR’s data infrastructure, enabling better real-time analysis of programmatic performance and outcomes. The improved system will provide health policymakers and program leaders with detailed insights that drive optimal decision-making and resource allocation in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Strengthening Global Health Leadership
PEPFAR, coordinated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy, has been a vital contributor to addressing the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, particularly in developing nations. Through a comprehensive whole-of-government approach, the program works with seven U.S. departments and agencies, training over 340,000 healthcare workers worldwide to strengthen healthcare delivery and fight against HIV/AIDS and other health challenges.
Anthony Pinheiro, Managing Director at AFS and U.S. Department of State Client Account Lead, emphasized the significance of PEPFAR: “As it enters its third decade, PEPFAR continues to make life-saving investments in sustainable healthcare systems. Our work will enable PEPFAR to scale its impact and ensure healthcare systems are equipped to respond to both ongoing and future global health threats.”
Expanding Technological Capabilities
The $190 million contract includes provisions for the implementation of cutting-edge systems that secure the collection and exchange of health data across global partner nations. This capability will allow for the efficient monitoring of key performance indicators in HIV care and treatment programs, driving progress toward PEPFAR’s goal of eradicating HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
John Roche, Managing Director at AFS, highlighted the importance of data in combating global health threats: “With the power of accurate, detailed data, PEPFAR is better positioned to address evolving challenges, whether it’s the HIV/AIDS epidemic, new risk groups, or future health threats like COVID-19.”
A Legacy of Impact
Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has provided antiretroviral treatment to over 20 million people, reduced HIV-related deaths, and supported orphaned and vulnerable children. The program’s comprehensive approach to healthcare has created enduring systems to confront emerging health challenges, making it one of the most effective global health programs in history.
AFS’s contribution to PEPFAR’s mission through this contract marks a continuation of Accenture’s commitment to leveraging digital transformation and advanced analytics to address some of the world’s most critical healthcare challenges. The firm’s expertise will help ensure that the systems supporting PEPFAR remain agile, scalable, and capable of meeting the future needs of millions affected by HIV/AIDS globally.
This contract will also allow AFS to deepen its collaboration with the U.S. government and global health organizations, further strengthening their shared mission of improving global health security and resilience.
