Serán Bioscience Raises $200M for Strategic Expansion and New Commercial Facility

Serán Bioscience, a leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has announced a $200 million strategic growth transaction led by Bain Capital Life Sciences. Existing investor Vivo Capital remains a key shareholder.

This investment will help Serán expand its operations, including the construction of a new commercial-scale manufacturing facility, which will enhance the company’s ability to offer a wide range of drug delivery and manufacturing solutions.

The new facility, expected to be completed in 2026, will focus on commercial-scale particle engineering for oral, pulmonary, and nasal drug delivery. It will include advanced manufacturing technologies such as spray drying, hot melt extrusion, nano-milling, and fluid-bed processing.

Additionally, the facility will feature capabilities for finished dosage forms, including granulation, tableting, coating, and encapsulation, and will also handle modified-release products. An adjacent facility, currently under construction, will support packaging, labeling, serialization, and distribution.

Serán’s Co-Founder and CEO, Dan Smithey, expressed excitement about the milestone, noting that the partnership with Bain Capital will allow the company to rapidly scale its clinical manufacturing operations and support new medicine launches.

Bain Capital’s Will Cozean praised Serán’s expertise in drug delivery technology, highlighting the company’s ability to address challenges in next-generation oral drugs and their impressive track record in growing technology-driven CDMO businesses.

Vivo Capital’s Managing Partner Gaurav Aggarwal also commended Serán’s achievements and emphasized the importance of the partnership as the company moves into commercial-scale projects.

With over 200 team members, including 150 scientists and engineers, Serán plans to add 150 more employees as part of its expansion. The completed campus in Bend, Oregon, will span nearly 200,000 square feet, positioning the company to provide end-to-end services for complex drug products.
